Laboratory Study of Shear Heating on Faults and Ridges of Icy Satellites using Transient Friction Experiments

Lead PI: Dr. Christine McCarthy

Unit Affiliation: Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)

June 2013 - June 2017
Inactive
Global
Project Type: Research

DESCRIPTION: The project will combine techniques for measuring the frictional response of rocks to cyclic loading and techniques for measuring the anelastic properties of ice under cyclic loading to better quantify the rheology of ice and to better understand how icy satellites behave. This will be done using the hybrid low-temperature friction and creep/attenuation apparatus being developed at LDEO.
