DESCRIPTION: The use of organic acids in mineral dissolution leads to rapid dissolution kinetics. Unfortunately, it is difficult to recycle these chemical agents throughout the process. Thus, this study focuses on the production of organic acids from food wastes that can be used for CO2 mineral sequestration. Since a microbial reactor is used to produce organic acids, these chemical ligands should be safe to use in geologic formations to promote in-situ mineral carbonation.
OUTCOMES: This project has resulted in patent applications and several conference presentations. A manuscript is currently in development.
