DESCRIPTION: The Next Generation of Drought Index (NGDI) project is a research consortium led by IRI with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and AIR Worldwide, funded and coordinated by the World Bank’s Crisis & Disaster Risk Finance (CDRF) team. The project focuses on moving the needle in drought risk financing for a science-based, locally co-designed, transparent approach to index design using a Senegal use case. The project is part of a new generation of local co-design processes and is integrated with the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Today, for Tomorrow (ACToday) project's work on transforming how IRI partners, such as the World Food Program (WFP), scale index insurance. Led by the Financial Instruments Sector Team (FIST), several units at and beyond IRI provided expertise and products to the project, including the IRI Data Library, the Climate Group, Media, IT, and the Sector Teams, as well as the Columbia University Water Center.
