Project Type: Research

DESCRIPTION: In order to discuss the trajectories of environmental change in the Arctic and its consequences for the Arctic system and global society the Earth Institute at Columbia University hosted a workshop that brought together natural scientists, engineers specializing in climate mitigation strategies, Arctic social scientists, political scientists and lawyers specializing in Arctic and climate change issues. In the build-up to the meeting, and throughout the workshop itself, there were lively discussions and many perspectives about “what is to be done” about the disappearance of Arctic sea ice.

OUTCOMES: The primary outcome of this project was the workshop itself. Secondarily, an article is being written by Organizing Committee members to pose publicly the central questions that emerged from the Workshop discussions and attendees have begun the process of using the questions clarified at the Workshop to inform U.S. research priorities in the Arctic.
