DESCRIPTION: Columbia’s SSFRP hosts NYC students and teachers in immersive science research projects, in local wetlands, shorelines, parks and University laboratories. We place teens in research teams tackling real research problems with undergraduate science majors and Lamont-Doherty scientists. Thus we provide a layered mentoring structure, with peer, near-peer, and professional science mentors to support student learning. Operating for the past 17 years, participation improves students' scientific efficacy and the likelihood of attending 4-year colleges, receiving financial aid, declaring STEM majors and completing those majors. Our alumni experience greater confidence and "life" skills, alongside specific cognitive learning. In addition, our partnering schools have moved toward more active, rigorous science learning strategies.
