DESCRIPTION: This project aims to improve the livelihoods of rural poor in the drylands of the Sahel through the management and enrichment of local plant diversity, and will support the scaling up of the Millennium Villages concept to the most impoverished and food-insecure rural communes of Mali.
OUTCOMES: 2009-2011: progress on plant diversity, including species classifications, conservation strategies, tree domestication, and women's education; and the development of Initiative 166 to implement a variety of interventions in 166 of the poorest communes in Mali, including budget assessments and public outreach to the communes to discuss the goals and the role of local government and community participation in the initiative.
