DESCRIPTION: The project reconstructed the last 34 Ma of the compositional evolution of the intra-oceanic Mariana volcanic arc by means of the distal ash bed recorded embedded into the nearby marine sediments. This was done by obtaining a comprehensive suite of major and trace elements and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope ratios from the ash particles.
OUTCOMES: Our results confirm the divergent compositional evolution of the Mariana arc and the neighboring Izu Bonin arcs as a result of the collosion of the Mariana arc with the West Pacific Seamount Province that begun ca. 15 million years ago.
