DESCRIPTION: The Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon is rich in biodiversity, and is technically under government protection. In reality, miners have flooded in to sift abundant gold from its riverbeds, leading to armed confrontations with the Peruvian military. Working in partnership with residents, NGOs and government officials, this project aimed to peacefully reconcile resource management with biodiversity, and create an updated management Land Use Plan for Tambopata National Reserve and its buffer zones. Outcomes: Enhanced management of Tambopata National Reserve Buffer Zone; Interagency Coordination for Peruvian Government; Public-Private Partnerships in Conservation; Enhanced Livelihoods for Residents in Buffer Zone
