DESCRIPTION: δ37Cl values were determined for Izu Bonin arc magmas erupted 0–44 Ma in order to better understand the time-dependent processing of volatiles in subduction zones.
OUTCOMES: Results show a steady, high Cl flux characterized by positive and negative δ37Cl since at least 42 Ma, which points to serpentinite subduction at the Izu Bonin trench and thus confirms their importance as fluid sources at arc front depths as well as the return of isotopically positive and negative Cl from the Earth surface to the mantle.
