NYC Healthcare Emergency Surge Staffing

Lead PI: Jeffrey Schlegelmilch

Unit Affiliation: National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP)

January 2023 - June 2023
Inactive
Project Type: Facilities & Operations

DESCRIPTION: During the COVID‐19 response, the New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) supported healthcare system readiness initiatives and citywide surge staffing efforts. DOHMH developed and shared operational guidance documents and resources with healthcare partners to create and maintain situational awareness and update providers on the latest evidence‐based guidelines to help mitigate staffing shortages at NYC healthcare facilities. In addition to those efforts at the facility level, DOHMH worked with NYCEM and other partners to offer staffing capacity to hospitals and nursing homes, including the use of Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers, NYC’s group purchasing option, receipt of federal resources (e.g., NDMS, DoD), and facility loan programs to bolster response capabilities. Unfortunately, healthcare staffing shortages still had substantial impacts on emergency surge clinical operations.
