DESCRIPTION: The project seeks to increase the scientific and technological capabilities of IPB in order to strengthen Indonesia’s capacity for climate change adaptation in the priority areas of agriculture and peatland forest management. The place-based collaborative research focuses on two distinct geographic areas (West Java and Central Kalimantan), and is implemented through stakeholder engagements at national, provincial and local levels, faculty exchanges, student internships, field-based research, technical tool development and training workshops. IRI will support the Institut Pertanian Bogor, Indonesia, increase scientific and technological capabilities associated with climate change adaptation. Priority areas are agricultural adaptation and peatland fires. Work will include modeling and analyses in the Indramayu District of West Java.
OUTCOMES: 2011-2012: Researchers developed a draft index insurance product; produced reports on connections between climate indices and peatland fire risk; collected and analyzed climate, agriculture and fire data; and conducted trainings and workshops for extension officers, farmers, and community members. The team has established a foundation for practical and policy-relevant research and partnerships. These partnerships will inform the project as it moves forward.
