DESCRIPTION: The Urban Design Lab and the Dominican Republic's FUNGLODE organization advised an Urban Design studio composed of 16 master and PhD candidates from the Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation and Planning and Columbia Engineering. The studio's study focused on the development of the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata (Puerto Plata).

OUTCOMES: The Fall 2011, Urban Ecology Studio, directed by Richard Plunz, Patricia Culligan, and Richard Gonzalez, embarked on a one-week research trip to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic with 16 master and PhD candidates from the Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation, Planning, and Columbia Engineering. The group visited selected municipalities where conversations concentrated on the impacts of international tourism and the reduction of investment towards regional development. The students presented preliminary findings at the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE), including His Excellency Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna. The final report of findings was completed by the Urban Design Lab in October 2012.
