High-resolution Shipboard Measurements of Phytoplankton Functional Types, Size Classes and Photosynthetic Competency in support of SUOMI-VIIRS Ocean Color Observations

Lead PI: Dr. Joaquim I Goes

Unit Affiliation: Biology and Paleo Environment, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)

July 2017 - May 2021
Inactive
Project Type: Research

DESCRIPTION: This project is part of an overarching goal of NOAA of Healthy Oceans through the development and improvement of ocean and coastal observations for understanding and monitoring geophysical, chemical, and biological processes). As part of this broad effort, LDEO scientists have been participating in annual calibration/validation studies for NOAA Ocean Color Satellite Suomi-VIIRS and VIIRS-20 and collecting data on chlorophyll, pigments, phytoplankton functional types, and net primary productivity in support of efforts to develop and refine algorithms for these satellites.
