M.A. in Climate and Society

The MA in Climate and Society is a 12-month interdisciplinary graduate program that trains professionals and academics to understand and address the impacts of climate variability and climate change on society and the environment. Through classes and research, students gain knowledge in both climate and social sciences as they relate to climate.

Columbia University, the Earth Institute and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory are at the forefront of climate research and applications. Climate and Society sits at this nexus and takes an interdisciplinary approach to the causes and impacts of the climate crisis as well as how to prepare society. The program draws on faculty members' expertise in earth sciences, climate dynamics, statistics and real-world problem-solving. Students are further able to take courses in law, international relations, engineering and other disciplines to tailor the program to their interests.

The MA in Climate and Society is offered by the Columbia Climate School in partnership with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. It also benefits from partnerships with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Earth Institute and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society.
